About Noto Serif Khitan Small Script
The Khitan small script was developed in the 10th century for the Khitan language of the Liao dynasty in northeast China, and remains only partially deciphered — making it one of the world's last undecoded historical writing systems. Noto Serif Khitan Small Script provides Unicode rendering for this enigmatic script, enabling sinologists, historians, and computational linguistics researchers to work with Khitan inscriptions and manuscripts digitally. The serif design acknowledges the script's monumental inscription origins, where Khitan characters were carved into stone stelae across Inner Mongolia and Manchuria.
