Overpass

Overpass draws its design inspiration directly from the lettering used on United States highway road signs, giving it an inherently legible, functional character with wide apertures and generous spacing. Developed by Delve Withrington and collaborators for Red Hat, it was subsequently expanded with Cyrillic support and a full variable wght axis covering nine weights. The combination of pragmatic legibility DNA and polished weight range makes it effective for infrastructure, government, and open-source software interfaces.

Overpass is a sans-serif inspired by the letterforms of American highway signage, adapted by Red Hat for web and interface use. Its wide, open letterforms and low stroke contrast reflect the clarity-at-speed principles of transportation typography. The design includes both regular and monospace variants, covering a broad typographic range.

Suitable for infrastructure, transportation, and civic technology projects. Its Red Hat association also makes it appropriate for open-source and enterprise Linux ecosystems. Pair with Overpass Mono for a unified code-and-text system.
