Als Teil von Googles umfangreichem Noto-Projekt bietet diese Schrift eine vollständige Abdeckung des Japanischen — Hiragana, Katakana, Kanji und Latein — innerhalb eines konsistenten humanistischen Designsystems, das entwickelt wurde, um «Tofu» (fehlende Zeichenboxen) zu eliminieren. Mit 9 Gewichten und einer variablen Gewichtsachse skaliert sie mühelos vom Fließtext bis zu Displaygrößen. Kyrillisch und Vietnamesisch werden ebenfalls unterstützt.
