The short version. Of the 556 variable families now in the Google Fonts library, the ones worth defaulting to in 2026 are Inter (opsz 14–32, wght 100–900) for interfaces, DM Sans (opsz 9–40, wght 100–1000) for the widest weight range on a two-axis file, Merriweather (opsz 18–144, wdth 87–112, wght 300–900) for serif text, Fraunces (four axes including SOFT and WONK) for expressive display, Roboto Flex (thirteen axes, the most in the library) or Google Sans Flex (six) for design systems, and JetBrains Mono (wght 100–800) for code.

Variable coverage in the Google Fonts library reached 556 of 1,944 families in August 2026 — 28.6 percent. The distribution is uneven: 288 of the 718 sans-serif families are variable, against 102 of 349 serifs, 79 of 358 handwriting faces, 62 of 468 display faces, and 25 of the 51 monospace families. Monospace is proportionally the most converted category in the library at 49 percent, sans-serif the largest in absolute terms.

The second distribution matters more than the first. Of those 556 variable families, 408 — 73 percent — expose a weight axis and nothing else. A further 116 expose two axes. Only 32 families in the entire library expose three or more, and just eight exceed five.

Six cuts of the Bitcount display family — the -ink variants — expose eleven axes each, placing them above Google Sans Flex on count alone. They are held out of the table because six of those eleven (SZP1, SZP2, XPN1, XPN2, YPN1, YPN2) are custom controls specific to that one pixel-grid design, and because the twelve Bitcount entries in the catalogue are cuts of a single family rather than twelve independent choices.

Four-letter uppercase tags such as SOFT, WONK, GRAD, ROND, and YTLC are custom axes defined by the type designer. Lowercase four-letter tags — wght, wdth, opsz, slnt, ital — are the five registered axes in the OpenType specification, and only those five have dedicated CSS properties.

Why the axis count matters more than the weight range

A single-axis variable file replaces several static weights and saves bytes. That is the well-understood case, and it describes 408 of the 556 variable families. The multi-axis families do something the static workflow could not reproduce at any file size.

An optical size axis carries genuinely different letterform proportions at each end. Merriweather at opsz 18 has thicker hairlines, wider spacing, and larger apertures than the same family at opsz 144, which is a re-drawn design rather than a scaled outline. Reproducing that with static files means shipping two families and switching between them by breakpoint. With the axis, the font-optical-sizing: auto declaration handles it from the rendered size.

A width axis removes the condensed-sibling problem. Archivo spans wdth 62 to 125 in one file; the static equivalent is Archivo plus Archivo Condensed plus Archivo Expanded. Inconsolata goes further at wdth 50–200, a four-fold range inside a monospace face.

Custom axes have no static equivalent at all. Fraunces exposes WONK as a binary 0–1 switch that swaps in alternate, deliberately irregular glyph forms, and SOFT as a 0–100 continuum that rounds terminals. Undercase Type shipped those as design controls, not as weight substitutes.

Best variable sans-serif families

Roboto Flex — thirteen axes, the outer limit of the format

Roboto Flex exposes thirteen axes, more than any other family in the Google Fonts library, at popularity rank 145. Four are registered — opsz 8–144, wdth 25–151, wght 100–1000, slnt -10–0 — and the remaining nine are parametric axes from the Font Bureau parametric model: XOPQ and YOPQ control horizontal and vertical stroke thickness independently, XTRA counter width, YTAS ascender height, YTDE descender depth, YTFI figure height, YTLC lowercase height, YTUC uppercase height, and GRAD grade.

The parametric axes are what separate it from every other family: they permit adjustments no static family can express, such as raising lowercase height by six units to compensate for a low-resolution display without touching cap height or advance widths. Ten weights, six subsets, no italic — the slnt axis substitutes for one.

Google Sans Flex — six axes, one file

At popularity rank 19, Google Sans Flex is the most multi-axis family in the library's top 100 by usage. Its wght axis runs from 1 to 1000 — the full permitted OpenType range — and its wdth axis from 25 to 151. GRAD adjusts stroke weight without changing advance widths, so text can be optically compensated for dark backgrounds without reflowing. ROND rounds terminals continuously, and slnt supplies a true oblique from -10 to 0 degrees. Eleven named instances and ten subsets.

The practical use is design-system tokens: a single file backs display, body, caption, and dark-mode variants without a second request. Roboto Flex covers the same ground with more control and less deployment; Google Sans Flex is the safer default on the strength of its rank-19 cache-hit odds.

Inter — the optical-size default for interfaces

Inter pairs wght 100–900 with opsz 14–32. The narrow optical range is deliberate — Rasmus Andersson scoped it to the sizes screen interfaces actually use, rather than to the 6–144 range a print-oriented family needs. Nine weights, italic, seven subsets. It remains the reference point for interface typography, and Inter Tight at rank 31 drops the optical-size axis but keeps wght 100–900 over tighter sidebearings, which suits headlines.

DM Sans — the widest weight range at two axes

DM Sans carries wght 100–1000, one of only a handful of families reaching 1000, alongside opsz 9–40. Ten named weights and a matching italic. Subset coverage is the constraint at two, so it suits Latin-script work. Colophon Foundry's geometric construction stays legible at 400 in a way that most geometric sans faces do not.

Nunito Sans — a lowercase-height axis

Nunito Sans is one of only two families in the library exposing YTLC (440–540), which adjusts lowercase height independently of cap height; the other is Roboto Flex. Raising lowercase height increases apparent size without increasing leading pressure, which matters in dense UI. Combined with opsz 6–12, wdth 75–125, and wght 200–1000, it gives four independent controls in a family at popularity rank 37.

Best variable serif families

Merriweather is the most complete text serif in the catalogue — three axes, seven weights, five subsets, and an optical range from 18 to 144 that covers caption through poster. Sorkin Type's design was screen-first from the outset, which shows in the sturdy serifs and generous x-height.

Source Serif 4 is the closest technical rival: opsz 8–60 and wght 200–900 across eight weights, with six subsets. Frank Griesshammer drew it as the serif companion to Source Sans 3, so the two share vertical metrics — a meaningful convenience when mixing them in one type scale.

Literata (opsz 7–72, wght 200–900, seven subsets) was commissioned by TypeTogether for extended reading on e-ink and screens. Newsreader from Production Type covers opsz 6–72 and wght 200–800 with a sharper, more editorial finish.

Fraunces is the display outlier: four axes, nine weights, and the WONK switch that swaps in irregular alternates. At popularity rank 151 it is far less deployed than its capability warrants.

Best variable display and monospace families

Display is the least converted category relative to its size — 62 variable families out of 468. Bricolage Grotesque at rank 14 is the notable entry, with opsz 12–96, wdth 75–100, and wght 200–800 across seven weights. Oswald (wght 200–700) remains the default variable condensed face at rank 23.

Monospace tells the opposite story: 25 of 51 families are variable, the highest conversion rate in the library. Inconsolata leads on range with wdth 50–200 and wght 200–900 — one of only three monospace faces in the library carrying a width axis, alongside Martian Mono (wdth 75–112.5) and Datatype (wdth 50–150). JetBrains Mono covers wght 100–800 with italic and ligatures, Source Code Pro wght 200–900, Geist Mono wght 100–900, and Google Sans Code adds a MONO axis (0–1) that morphs between proportional and monospaced metrics in one file.

Driving the axes from CSS

Registered axes have dedicated properties, and those should be preferred — they inherit and animate predictably:

Requesting a sub-range rather than the whole axis reduces the downloaded file. The Google Fonts API accepts range syntax:

The variable font playground renders any axis combination live, and the CSS generator emits the corresponding @font-face block for self-hosted WOFF2 files.

When a static font is still the better choice

Three cases argue against variable.

A design that uses exactly one weight downloads less as a single static cut. The variable file carries the entire interpolation space whether or not the design uses it, so a one-weight site pays for eight unused weights.

Older rendering paths still exist in embedded browsers and some email clients, where a variable file falls back to its default instance. That default is usually the regular weight, which silently flattens hierarchy rather than failing visibly.

Subsetting interacts badly with wide axis ranges. A variable file already trimmed to a Latin unicode-range still contains every weight; combining aggressive subsetting with a narrow axis request is what actually produces the smallest payload.
