Method: what earned a place on this list

Four requirements were applied, and a family had to satisfy all four.

The first is legibility between 14px and 20px, the range where most body copy actually renders. Display faces that resolve cleanly at 48px and lose their counters at 16px were excluded regardless of how often they appear on the popularity list.

The second is a weight range wide enough to build typographic hierarchy inside one family — at minimum a regular, a medium or semibold, and a bold. Eight of the eleven entries above cover seven weights or more.

Paul D. Hunt's Source Sans 3 carries a wght axis from 200 to 900 across eight weights, a matching italic, and seven subsets. Its slightly narrower proportions fit more words per measure than Inter at the same point size, and the letterforms retain enough humanist modulation that a 900-word article does not read as flat. Popularity rank 81 understates its suitability; the families ranked above it are mostly there through framework defaults rather than through editorial fit.

DM Sans — geometric, with an optical-size axis

DM Sans is the widest-ranging family on the shortlist: ten weights on a wght axis that runs 100 to 1000, plus an opsz axis from 9 to 40. That combination allows a display cut at weight 900 and a caption cut at weight 300 from one file. The trade-off is subset coverage — two subsets only — so it belongs on Latin-script projects. Roboto holds popularity rank 2 and adds a wdth axis (75–100) alongside wght 100–900, which makes it the practical choice when a design needs condensed and regular widths from one file. Noto Sans goes further on the width axis — 62.5 to 100 — and covers eight subsets, which is why multilingual products standardise on it. Neither is the most characterful face in the catalogue; both are the safest.

Three combinations from the shortlist, each chosen so the two families differ in skeleton rather than merely in weight.
