The difference between the thickest and thinnest parts of a letter's strokes. High-contrast fonts (like Didot) have dramatic variation.
In typography, contrast refers to the variation between the thick and thin strokes within individual letterforms — not to be confused with color contrast between text and background. It's one of the most immediate signals of a typeface's historical origins and appropriate use.
High-contrast typefaces like Didot, Bodoni, or the Google Font Playfair Display have extreme differences between their hairline thin strokes and bold thick strokes. This creates an elegant, refined appearance at display sizes but can cause optical problems at small sizes, where thin strokes may appear to disappear entirely on lower-resolution screens.
Low-contrast typefaces — including most sans-serifs and contemporary screen-optimized fonts like Inter or Open Sans — have strokes of nearly uniform weight. This consistency improves legibility at small sizes and across different rendering environments.
/* High-contrast serif: beautiful at large sizes, needs care at small */
.display-heading {
font-family: 'Playfair Display', serif;
font-size: 56px;
letter-spacing: -0.02em;
}
/* Low-contrast sans: reliable across all sizes */
.body-copy {
font-family: 'Inter', sans-serif;
font-size: 16px;
}
/* A moderate-contrast option for body text with personality */
.readable-serif {
font-family: 'Lora', serif;
font-size: 18px;
line-height: 1.7;
}
Contrast has a direct relationship with a font's stress — the axis around which stroke weight transitions. In old-style serifs, stress is diagonal (following the angle of a calligraphic pen). In transitional serifs, it shifts toward vertical. In modern serifs like Didot, it becomes perfectly vertical, which is what produces the dramatic horizontal hairlines.
When choosing fonts for responsive design, contrast is a practical consideration: a high-contrast font that looks spectacular on a retina display at 72px may render poorly on a standard display at 14px, making font-size and screen density more important to the font decision than they might initially seem.
For designers working with variable fonts, stroke contrast can sometimes be controlled through custom axes. Some variable fonts expose an optical size (opsz) axis that subtly adjusts stroke contrast as the font scales — increasing contrast at large display sizes for elegance, and reducing it at small body sizes for legibility. This is one of the most sophisticated features of contemporary type design, and fonts like Literata (used by Google Play Books) are designed with this adaptive contrast in mind.
